Leeward Islands inn - accommodation at quality standards
Two inns at Nelson's offer an historic and romantic perspective on an Antigua vacation. The Admirals Inn has a low-key maritime ambiance; weathered bricks and timber, old-fashioned nautical décor, a view of the sea, and a great bar. The inn houses thirteen rooms divided over three buildings with moderate rates beginning at $95 double. Just across the way, The Copper and Lumber Store Hotel (adds a bit more elegance to the British naval setting. Colors are lighter and rooms more spacious, with décor emphasizing Georgian romance more so than the nautical elements. Rates begin at $135 double and the 14- room hotel is divided into four categories of accommodations. Go to Cranston’s Antique Inn on Saba for the atmosphere and the cheap prices, not for any grand style. Everyone congregates for rum drinks and gossip on the front terrace of this inn near the village roadway, on the west coast north of Fort Bay. It's an old-fashioned house, more than 100 years old, with antique four-poster beds in all the rooms. Mr. Cranston, the owner, will gladly rent you the same bedroom where Queen Juliana once spent a holiday in 1955. Aside from the impressive wooden beds, the furnishings are mostly hit or miss, and not much has changed since the queen checked in oh-so-long ago. The bedrooms are quite tiny, although the floral spreads jazz them up a bit. All the rooms have private -- but extremely cramped -- shower-only bathrooms. Mr. Cranston has a good island cook, who makes use of locally grown spices. Island dishes include goat meat, roast pork from Saba pigs, red snapper, and broiled grouper. Facilities include restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; babysitting. Juliana's hostelry is set on a hillside and each guest room is modern, immaculate, and simply but comfortably furnished. All have access to a sun deck and balconies opening onto beautiful views of the Caribbean, except nos. 1, 2, and 3, which are in the rear. Opt for one of the upper-level rooms (no. 7, 8, or 9), as they offer the best views. The shower-only bathrooms are small but adequate, and housekeeping wins high marks here. Also available are a 2 1/2-room apartment, complete with kitchenette; and a renovated original Saban cottage, with two bedrooms, a spacious living room, a dining room, a TV, and a fully equipped kitchen. Facilities include restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; recreation room; babysitting.
