Despite its small size, St. Maarten/St. Martin offers a surprising range of accommodations: large sterile high-rise all-inclusive resorts, medium-size chain hotels catering to tour groups, a luxury enclave, small "bourgeois" hotels, locally owned guesthouses ranging from boutique-y to budget, not to mention villas, apartments, and -- the scourge of the island -- timeshare complexes. As you leave the airport, it seems you can't go more than a few feet without someone hawking a new or expanded development. Hurricanes, particularly Luis in 1995, delayed or destroyed many a property, but the mania is experiencing a resurgence, even on the quieter French side. Frankly, it's getting increasingly difficult to distinguish hotels from timeshares, which are no longer restricted to annexes -- especially on the Dutch side. As a result, maintenance isn't always as diligent as it should be: Be prepared to find more wear and tear from ripped fabric to rusted faucets. In general, the French resorts are more intimate and romantic, though the flip side is periodic problems with electricity and water pressure at smaller hostelries. What the Dutch properties lack in ambience, they compensate for in functional, comfortable rooms with all the "extras."
