Leeward Islands golf - do it in an exotic way
Golf de St-François in Guadeloupe is one of the best courses in the Leeward Islands. Six of its 18 holes are ringed with water traps, the winds are devilishly unpredictable, and the par is a sweat-inducing 71. This fearsome course displays the wit and skill of its designer, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Most of the staff is multilingual, and because the course is owned by the local municipality, it's a lot less snobby than you might expect. Four Seasons Resort Nevis was carved out of a coconut plantation and tropical rainforest in the 1980s, and its undulating beauty is virtually unequaled. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course begins at sea level, rises to a point midway up the slopes of Mount Nevis, and then slants gracefully back down near the beachfront clubhouse. Electric carts carry golfers through a labyrinth of well-groomed paths, some of which skirt steep ravines. The Sandy Lane and St. Kitts courses are par 72; Mullet Bay, par 70. Greens fees: at Sandy Lane, about $40 for 18 holes, $25 for 9 holes with golf carts available at $35 for 18 holes, $25 for 9 holes; at Mullett Bay, $50 and $35 with carts included; at St. Kitts, $20 and $12 with carts available at $20 for 18 holes, $15 for 9 holes. The fees at Cunard La Toc and Cap Estate are $10 and $12, respectively. A trip to the new Temenos Golf Club—a gorgeous, seven-thousand-plus-yard Greg Norman design that’s part of an in-progress St. Regis Resort at the island’s southwestern end—will leave you a whole lot more sympathetic to Anguilla’s claim to nirvana. The course and clubhouse are open and, for a while at least, guests from anywhere on the island can play there for a daily fee. A deal for a second, Jack Nicklaus-designed course at the other end of the island is on the drawing board. With the savvy that’s come to characterize it, Anguilla is finally reaching out to the last holdout group of big spenders it hasn’t been able to woo: golfers.
