Leeward Islands gaming - pocker and more
A perhaps apocryphal anecdote relates that the French/Dutch border in St. Martin was established by an 18th-century drinking contest. How fitting, then, that St. Maarten/St. Martin arguably contains more bars per capita than any other Caribbean island. Or maybe it just seems that way, especially given the myriad sunset booze cruises to toast the legendary elusive green flash (not a superhero but an atmospheric phenomenon caused by prismatic refraction of the sun's rays -- or one margarita too many). It's more a commentary on the island's party-hearty rep than a reflection on the friendly, fun-loving locals. Bars come in all shapes and sizes, from rickety rum shops to salvaged scows to neon-streaked nightclubs. And of course, after gamboling on the beaches, you can gamble in the Dutch side's casinos. Whether you seek a (relatively) quiet sunset cocktail or after-hour boogieing to the latest urban funk, St. Maarten/St. Martin delivers. Gaming is currently only legal on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. For all its self-promotion about a Caribbean Vegas, the scene is closer to Laughlin or Biloxi. Regardless, the 10 casinos offer wonderful free living theater, at times of the absurd, with everyone from blue-haired fanny packers to dreadlocked Rastas robotically feeding the maw of the machines. If you indulge, just remember there's no such thing as a sure system (or, Lord help us, ESP) -- and the odds always favor the house, especially in games like Keno. As for any claims of "loose slots," don't bet on it. Gambling, like life, defies prediction. Only a very few "professionals" earn a living by making a killing. St. Maarten's daily "grind" (low-end betting) is geared more toward voyeurs and "virgins" (gaming-speak for first-timers) anyhow; whale-watching is reserved for the marine mammals, not the high-stakes types. Hours vary (only one is open 24/7), but most casinos are generally open from 1pm to 6am.
